Welcome to the Buelteman Studio Blog!
Teton Range
On my recent trip to Jackson Wyoming to deliver my prints to Shari Brownfield Fine Art, I was smitten by the raw power and majesty of the Teton Range. I avoid photographing in the National Park system, as it feeds an idea antithetical to my art, which is that the beauty of the natural world lives only within its boundaries.
May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month
Here I offer important information about the evolving scourge of Lyme Disease in the United States, including symptoms, prevention, and proper response to tick bites.
New Public Art Installation!
Enjoy a new installation of Robert Buelteman’s stunning cameraless artworks through July at 630 California Street in San Francisco.
“Unseen/Seen” at Shari Brownfield Fine Art, Jackson, Wyoming
Another exhibition at Shari Brownfield Fine Art in Jackson, Wyoming, this time celebrating the love of nature as expressed through my black-and-white landscape art.
Why Do I Make My Own Analog Black-and-White Prints?
This question would have been laughable in the art community 25 years ago, but now, with the digital revolution firmly in place, it seems that now is a good time to answer that question.
March is Women’s History Month!
I was raised in a female family, and by that I mean, a family composed of my three sisters, my mother, and my father, whose job as a pilot for Pan American require long absences. Later in life, I found I was much more comfortable with women than men, as it seemed I lacked the competitive fire of my male friends.
Photographic Art in the 1970s
“Photography is not, to begin with, an art form at all”
So wrote Susan Sontag in On Photography, a celebrated collection of critical essays published in the New York Review of Books between 1973 and 1977. She continued, “Photography is not an art like, say, painting and poetry.” Eventually, she would publish a partial refutation of these opinions in her 1993 book Regarding the Pain of Others.
Current Artwork Installations in San Francisco
Here are a few of my infrequent public exhibitions in San Francisco.

The Village Hub Holiday Party and Gift Faire
My talented wife Julie B and I are participating in Woodside’s annual Gift Faire at the Village Hub adjacent to the Woodside Village Church, where my family regularly attended after moving to town in 1954.
What about Color?
I think we are all familiar with the iconic argument about which is better, the book or the movie. The best analogy I have to offer is that black-and-white photography is to the book what color photography is to the movie.
Project Review: Mistral Restaurant
Mistral, opened in 1994 by my friend and restauranteur Greg St. Claire in Redwood Shores recently added several of my color cameraless artworks including Bougainvillea, Russian River Oak, and Rebecca’s Geraniums to their private dining room.
What is the “Green Flash?”
This fleeting spectacle that occurs under the right circumstances at sunrise or sunset is the result of the effects upon the visible light spectrum as influenced by our atmosphere and its contents.
Redwoods as an Idea
The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. -Steinbeck
“Sand Hill Road” Podcast with Scott McGrew
Nowhere is there a greater number of artworks by Robert Buelteman per mile than on this fabled stretch of road known as “Venture Capital Row.”
