One of the great privileges of my life was the ten years I was given access to the Crystal Springs Watershed. This 23,000 acre wonderland on the peninsula south of San Francisco is a time-capsule of California’s past, as it has been fenced off for over a century.
This land holds diverse and unique habitats ranging from oak woodlands and redwood and coniferous forests to serpentine grasslands. It is carefully managed by the San Francisco Public Utility Commission to protect the quality of the water in the reservoirs as well as the abundance of native plant and animal life, including many rare, threatened, or endangered species.
The Peninsula Watershed is also a State-designated Fish and Game Refuge and a protected area within the UNESCO Golden Gate Biosphere Reserve.
